Most of the time when someone finds out we homeschool we get some wild comments and they express some thoughts that aren’t quite accurate. So I’m here to spread some TRUTH about homeschooling and why what most people believe to be true is actually a myth.

Here are some common myths I have heard as a homeschooler:
Myth #1: You have to be patient
Let’s be real, homeschool parents are just as imperfect and sinful as any other person. We are just choosing to homeschool despite our imperfections.
If we waited to homeschool when we were perfectly patient there would be no homeschoolers, because that will never happen.
Something I have learned through not just homeschooling but motherhood in general, you will apologize so much! And that’s not necessarily a bad thing, when we live and learn with our child they are seeing us as examples, so they are learning when we mess up and take accountability for it.
So as you go forth in your homeschooling and motherhood journey, remember you are always teaching them something, even if that something is how to apologize.
Myth #2: You need a background in education to teach your children
Sure you can have an educational background and maybe that will help you in some ways but it is not necessary. I know plenty of momma’s who are homeschooling that don’t have an educational background.
Even if you don’t know much about the subjects you will be teaching your child, thats okay! Just be willing and open to learn with them. There are load of resources on the internet that can help you learn and teach every subject.
Myth #3: Homeschool kids are anti-social
I wouldn’t be surprised if this is the number one concern when people think about homeschooling.
Homeschooling is what you make it, if you want to be social you have so many opportunities these days to socialize with people of all walks of life. You can find homeschool play groups, homeschool co-ops, 4-H clubs, sports clubs and so much more to join in and have socialization.
Don’t let socialization be the reason you don’t homeschool because the opportunities are endless.
Myth #4: Homeschoolers can’t get into college
100% a myth! Of course some homeschoolers don’t go to collage, just like some public schoolers don’t. But any students that want to go to college are able to do so.
Both my siblings went from homeschooling to community college and then to universities. One is a RN and the other is an anesthesiologist. I took a different path and went to Technical school. So don’t think just because your children aren’t on the traditional educational rout that they can’t further their education post high school.
Myth #5: Homeschoolers just play all day
Well, like we can and sometimes we do. BUT, play is still learning, in my opinion!
Now, we don’t all play. I’m big into letting kids play, especially the younger ages. It’s so good for them and they really do learn so much. But we don’t play all day and as they get older their studies also increase depending what method you choose. This is why it’s so important to decide with method you want to do. I give a brief overview of some in this blog post.
This is just 5 out of the many myths about homeschooling. If there are any other myths you’d like me to go over leave a comment and let me know!
I hope you have a beautiful day!
